Review: Silence (Hush, Hush, #3) by Becca Fitzpatrick

Spoiler warning! This is the third book in the Hush, Hush series. If you haven't read Hush, Hush or Cresendo then look away now! You can read my review of Hush, Hush here and my Crescendo review here.

Silence by Becca Fitzpatrick

Author: Becca Fitzpatrick.Website|Twitter
Published: 7 June 2012 (Simon & Schuster Children's Books)
Format: Paperback
Pages: 440
Amazon: paperback|Kindle
Waterstone's: paperback|e-book
Book Depository: paperback

Source: Borrowed from library

Plot Summary (from Goodreads):
The noise between Patch and Nora is gone. They've overcome the secrets riddled in Patch's dark past, bridged two irreconcilable worlds and faced heart-wrenching tests of betrayal, loyalty and trust - all for a love that will transcend the boundary between heaven and earth.

My Review:
I loved Hush, Hush, and whilst Crescendo didn't quite live up to it, I was still really excited to read Silence. The book starts out with a really interesting twist, which is that Nora has amnesia. Cue her trying to piece back what has happened to her and figure out what's going on in the world around her.

At first I really loved the amnesia angle. It felt like a fresh approach to the story, and sometimes in the middle of a series you really need something to shake it up a bit. I became bored of it quite quickly, though, I'm sad to say. The main problem was that Nora had pretty much forgotten everything that had happened in Hush, Hush and Crescendo. Her trying to figure out what had happened in her past just became one huge recap of the previous two books which I didn't really need. All the way throughout the book, Nora is constantly questioning herself and what is happening. The annoying thing is that, as a reader, you have all the answers to those questions so there's no suspense to find out what happened - you already know!

The recapping took up over half the book, which meant there wasn't much of an actual plot. I got bored quite quickly and would find myself struggling to get through it. It didn't help that I seem to have lost all connection with Patch and Nora. That perfect chemistry they'd had in the first two books just felt like it fizzled out a bit.

It wasn't all bad. Hank still makes a great villain and there's a bit of action towards the end which got me back interested in the story. I just can't help be disappointed in this book. I felt like this series had so much potential. I hope there's some good stuff waiting to happen in the final book in the series which is released at the end of the month. I feel like this should maybe have been a trilogy, not a four book series, because I don't think enough happens plot wise in Silence, especially not to justify the length of it. It could have been so much shorter.

Still worth reading if you like the characters and the world but nowhere near as good as the previous two books. I was really torn between a 2 and a 3 star rating. Taking into account the series as a whole, it'd probably get 3, but I know I've enjoyed 3 star books a lot more than this. So it's 2* I'm afraid.

Rating: 2*

News: Becca Fitzpatrick announces new book "Black Ice"

Yesterday Becca Fitzpatrick, author of the Hush, Hush series announced she has secured a deal to publish her new book Black Ice. Announcing the news on her blog, she included a plot summary of her latest novel which is described as "a riveting stand-alone psychological thriller". Read the description below!

Seventeen-year-old Britt Pfeiffer has been training to backpack the crest of the Teton Range, but she isn't prepared when her ex-boyfriend, who still haunts her every thought, wants to join her. Before Britt can explore her feelings for Calvin, an unexpected blizzard forces her to seek shelter in a remote cabin, accepting the hospitality of its two occupants—who then take her hostage. In exchange for her life, Britt agrees to guide the men off the mountain. As they set off into the storm, Britt knows she must stay alive long enough for Calvin to find her. But the task isn't as straightforward as it seems. Finding one chilling piece of evidence after another, Britt uncovers the truth about a series of murders that have taken place in the region…and in uncovering this, she may become the killer’s next target.
Are you excited for Black Ice? Personally I love a good thriller and the fact this book will be a standalone, not a series, really excites me!

Review: Crescendo (Hush, Hush #2) by Becca Fitzpatrick

Spoiler warning! This book is the second in the Hush, Hush series. If you haven't read Hush, Hush then look away now! Or read my review of Hush, Hush right here.
Crescendo by Becca Fitzpatrick

Author: Becca Fitzpatrick. Website|Twitter
Published: 28 April 2011 (Simon & Schuster Children's Books)
Pages: 432
Amazon: paperback|Kindle
Waterstone's: paperback
Book Depository: paperback

Source: Borrowed from library

Plot Summary (from Waterstone's):
Nora should know better than to think her life can return to normal after falling in love with a fallen angel. And Nora's life isn't normal - her dad was murdered, and the facts about his death just don't add up. Now Nora's own life is in imminent danger. Are she and Patch strong enough for the battle ahead?

My Review:
I really enjoyed Hush, Hush so I was excited to pick this book up! It's not all roses for Nora and Patch as their relationship faces new obstacles and Patch is acting even more mysterious. Throw in a guy from Nora's past and more problems with Marcie Millar and Nora's got a lot on her plate.

What was great about this book was that it delved a little deeper into Nora's family. There's more of a focus on her dad's death and even her mum gets a bit more notice. I love all the description and tension throughout the book. I think the stand out character for me, though, is Vee. She just adds that fantastic wit and humour throughout and some of the stuff she comes out with is brilliant. Every book should have a Vee!

When it comes to the relationship between Nora and Patch there's a lot of bickering and jealousy, which wasn't quite what I was hoping for. Patch had won me over as a bad boy in the first book but I wasn't sure he had he same allure this time round. I think the thing with this series is that so much of the book hangs on Patch being mysterious to make the story work. You spend the whole time as a reader wanting to know what he's really thinking and really up to but sometimes I can't help but feel sorry for Nora. I just wish she had more to be happy about! There's definitely a certain pull between them though that made me still care about what happens. I think the author gets that tension between them pretty spot on.

In this book we also get to meet Scott, a guy Nora knew as a child. He adds a new element of mystery to the book as Nora's sure there's more to him than he's let on. With so many shady characters it's so hard to work out who's just being secretive and who's genuinely up to no good. It meant I was completely in the dark by the end which I loved, but sometimes I was struggling to keep up!

This being the second in a series, it really builds up the world that Fitzpatrick has created which is so detailed and intricate. I totally love her writing. It's so addictive! And as with Hush, Hush, the ending to this book was what really made it. There was plenty of drama, action and revelations which had me on tenterhooks!

Review: Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick

Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick

Published: 27 May 2010 (Simon & Schuster Children's Books)

Buy: Amazon: paperback|Kindle Waterstone's: paperback|e-book Book Depository: paperback

Plot Summary: (from Goodreads)
A SACRED OATH
A FALLEN ANGEL
A FORBIDDEN LOVE

Romance was not part of Nora Grey's the plan. She's never been particularly attracted to the boys at her school, no matter how hard her best friend, Vee, pushes them at her. Not until Patch comes along. With his easy smile and eyes that seem to see inside her, Patch draws Nora to him against her better judgment.

But after a series of terrifying encounters, Nora's not sure whom to trust. Patch seems to be everywhere she is and seems to know more about her than her closest friends. She can't decide whether she should fall into his arms or run and hide. And when she tries to seek some answers, she finds herself near a truth that is way more unsettling than anything Patch makes her feel.

For she is right in the middle of an ancient battle between the immortal and those that have fallen - and, when it comes to choosing sides, the wrong choice will cost Nora her life.

My Review:
I was so excited to start this book.. Hush, Hush tells the story of Nora Grey who finds herself being drawn to the mysterious Patch when they're seated together in their biology class. Not only that, but strange things begin happening around Nora; things she can't explain.

This book had me totally hooked from the first couple of chapters. There were so many questions I wanted answering! When Patch is introduced, he's such a mysterious character that, like Nora, I automatically wanted to know more about him. Nora is drawn to him for reasons she can't totally explain, but it managed to avoid feeling too cheesy. I liked that it wasn't too lovey-dovey type of romance.

As well as being mysterious, I loved that Patch was a total bad boy. He was just such an interesting character. In fact, this book is filled with mysterious, intriuging characters! Nora is definitely fascinating: she's lost her dad and struggles to trust people, she sees the school counsellor, her mum is always away working.
I adored her friendship with her best friend Vee. The bounce off each other so well! There's Marcie, the typical popular kid who aggrovates the two of them. Throw in two boys from the local private school and you've got a whole ensemble of interesting people!

Throughout the book you get the whole sense of something really creepy going on. As Nora becomes more and more concerned with the strange things happening to her, the atmosphere gets more and more tense. And then suddenly something dramatic happens and I couldn't put the book down! The author makes you wait a long time before the big reveal so I spent most of the book on the edge of my seat, just waiting for everything to come out. And I loved it! The climax of the story was made even more exciting by the tension created throughout the book and there was plenty of action towards the end. There were some twists and turns I wasn't expecting either which made it even more satisfying!

I can tell this series is going to be one I'm going to want to completely immerse myself in. I love the characters and the excitement and the world itself sounds like it has so much potential. I can't wait to discover more!
